October 29th  SPECIAL YOUTH SUNDAY OFFERING CALIFORNIA LUTHERAN UNIVERSITY
On Sunday October 29th young people will appeal to the congregation for a special offering to support California Lutheran University.  They are hoping to raise $400 through this appeal and will submit a request for matching funds from Thrivent Financial.
Some of our upcoming kids are thinking of eventually attending CLU, but as everyone knows–private universities are particularly expensive.  Scholarship help is imperative. CLU is an impressive institution.  One of our students is currently there.

WOMEN OF THE ELCA will meet for a craft workday on Tuesday morning. If you are planning to attend the Grand Canyon Synod Convention that will be held in Tucson on October 13-14, please call Elfine Lemke as soon as possible. Free Trade Coffee is available for sale. See Elfine following the service.

CALENDARS FOR SALE Youth will be selling 2007 calendars and notecards today after the service. These items make great gifts for any occasion. The table will be set up outside the front doors. Will You Help Harvest at Corn Fest? Thursday and Friday September 29-31 If you can help only for an hour, our youth would appreciate your help with their ring toss game booth. We also need a sponsor to cover the cost of prizes for the game participants. Jan Parrott can answer any questions (758-5578) and there is a sign-up sheet today on the table in the narthex. This is fun, so grab boots and spurs and join us to lend a hand. Corn Fest is sponsored by Kiwanis, and becomes a bigger event every year. Our youth benefit greatly, as do many others.

Waiting to Greet You Our New Secretary in the Office Her name is Sonia Montoya, She and her husband Leroy (a contractor specializing in remodeling) have lived in Bullhead for five years. They have three girls, 12, 11, 8) and a boy 6. She writes, “I am looking forward to doing my very best to meet the needs of the church, and I am happy to work for your pastor. It will be a pleasure to meet you!”

Do You Enjoy Coffee & Other Goodies? Can You Occasionally Help? Helpers are needed to prepare the coffee and cookies following the Sunday service. A sign-up sheet is on the table with the goodies. Marilyn Simons coordinates these efforts, and would appreciate your efforts. Instruction is gladly given to introduce the coffee routine to those new to the effort. Speaking of Coffee... You Won’t Find Any Better Than This... Do You Know You Can Buy Non- Profit, Fair Traded Coffee Here at Community? Community Lutheran Church Women are resuming sale of Lutheran World Relief fair-traded coffee. “Fair-Traded’ means that all profits go to third world farmers who raise them. There are no profits for anyone else, least of all those who sell it. You are doing a work of important charity by buying this coffee, because it is ending the ‘take all and give nothing in return’ practices of the large coffee companies in the third world where growers don ’t even get enough to feed their families. AND, THIS COFFEE IS FRESHER THAN ANY YOU CAN BUY in stores. Following the worship Service on most Sundays, including today, Elfine Lemke offers this coffee for sale.

IGNITE! About 20 people particpated in last Sunday’s Bible study! And what a lively discussion and learning experience! The focus was, “What should you think when the Bible gives seemingly conflicting answers to the same questions? And, what do you do when biblical directions are given (say, for example, the role of women in the church) which are plainly in conflict with the spirit and practice of Jesus?” The answer offered was: Do as Jesus taught. Do as Jesus would do. Pastor reminded the group that Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth...” and, that the Gospel presents Jesus as the Word of God. He is, in fact always the final word. Janna Wilhelm was study leader. The next session will meet Sunday, October 1 for a very timely discussion: “What does the Bible say about war? What does it say about peace? Plan to attend these monthly studies following the Service. A bonus is the potluck that follows. Chelsey Larson and her family will be study leaders.

Colorado River District Fall-Winter Meeting Invited to Community Lutheran Our Congregation Council has invited the churches of the Colorado River District of the Grand Canyon Synod to meet here at Community in November. The District includes congregations from St. George, Utah, to northern Arizona. Our nearest neighbors are in Kingman and Lake Havasu. The greatest number of churches are in Las Vegas. When the district met this past week at Community, Las Vegas, they expressed and interest in coming to Bullhead City, and our Council, meeting last Tuesday, invited them!

ATTENTION THRIVENT FINANCIAL MEMBERS! The election for the Colorado River Chapter officers will be held in early November. Both benefit and associate members are eligible to vote in the election. Now is the time to consider serving as a candidate for one of these positions. If you are passionate about helping others in your church and community, serving on the chapter board is a great way to make a difference through the chapter programs. The Congregational Coordinators will have more information on the board positions, as well as Thrivent membership. The Congregational Coordinators for Community Lutheran are Elfine Lemke, Marilyn Simons and Pat Thompson.

Schedule Change for Holy Communion There will be only one Holy Communion during the month of July on the last Sunday, July 30th. The regular communion schedule will resume in August. The reason for the change is that Pastor John will be away, and there are no ordained clergy available. Jonathan Pfeiffer will lead worship for four Sundays in July, assisted by other members of Community. Pastor John will return for Holy Communion July 30.

From the Senior High Youth Thanks to all who shared food and fellowship at the potluck last week.... Especially to Elfine Lemke who prepared wonderful German specialties, and to Ken & Verna Gilbertson who provided a cake in celebration of their 57th wedding anniversary. This is Confirmation Day for Sara Baker, Alecia Irgens, Steven Kennicott, Chelsey Larson, Abby Loken, and Joe Parrott. They are confirming their Baptism after several years of study of Christian faith.

This is also the festival of Pentecost, celebrating the gifts of the Holy Spirit. The worship Service today gives all of us the opportunity to renew our appreciation of our Baptism into Christ, affirm our commitment to growth in the varied gifts of the Holy Spirit, and confirm the Christian direction of our lives.

Senior High Youth and Parents Meet Next Sunday, June 11, for Planning Potluck Three items are on the agenda: 1. Hear about Tirosh and Via De Cristo. 2. Finalize plans for “Cruzando” 3. Begin planning for Fall, 2006, Youth and Family Christian Ed and Fellowship events. Don't forget to bring a dish to share!

What is Via De Cristo? It's Spanish for “Way of Christ” and is a weekend which takes a Biblical look at Christianity as a daily lifestyle. It renews faith of individuals and families. It's a combined effort of laity and clergy which renews, strengthens, and encourages a Christian outlook which affects both one's relationships and interactions in work and play. The Pentecost season is an especially good time to take a look at Via De Cristo, because it is guided way to open oneself to growing appreciation and awareness of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. In other words, it is a memorable experience! The next Via De Cristo weekend will be September 21-24. On Sunday, June 11 there will be persons with us to tell us about Via De Crist from firsthand experience. Dennis and Francis Bertles, members of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, Lake Havasu, will be available to talk to the curious following morning worship. Chuck Wickersham and Mary Pfeiffer have arranged for the Bertles to also talk with youth and families at brunch.

Confirmation on Pentecost Sunday
Next Sunday, June 4, six of our youth confirm their Christian faith, in the Confirmation Service recalling the vows of their Baptism. For over two years including the Confirmation Retreat just recently held in Sedona, Sara Baker, Alecia Irgens, Steven Kennicott, Chelsey Larson, Abby Loken, and Joe Parrott have been given special instruction and grown in their understanding of the Christian faith with weekly study sessions led by Steve Larson, Mary Pfeiffer, and also Susan Wickersham. This group being confirmed on Sunday especially thanks the Congregation for helping make the recent Sedona retreat possible. On the week-end of May 5-7, the six, (along with Janna Wilhelm, who was confirmed in the fall of 2003), were with Steve Larson, Mac and Kay McCollum, Maureen Bessey, and Pastor John and Mary Peiffer where they participated in a memorable learning experience led mainly by Pastor John and Moe Bessey assisted by Steve Larson. Every moment of the week-end was full, from 7am to 11pm, with thought provoking study sessions and personal sharing of personal issues, broken up with swimming, walks along Oak Creek and a visit to the Chapel on the Rock. Timeshare space was provided by the McCullums and Mary Pfeiffer. Special thanks was given to Maureen Bessey, who called upon many years of experience with retreats to plan a schedule and prepare food, in advance, with Kay McCollum. Drivers were Steve Larson and Mac McCollum. Over the more than two years of leading this group in their studies, it has been a pleasure to witness how they have developed in their personal faith and how, as a group, they have grown supportive of one another in faith. Gratefulness to you, the Congregation, for your support and willing encouragement runs very deep.

Message to the Congregation Naomi Gilbertson sends a big “thank you” to our Community Lutheran family for the hospital visits and the delicious dinners proved for the month after their accident. Many thanks also for the prayers and cards after Gordon's surgery. They feel that their recovery was hastened because of them.

Judy teaches business at MCC, and her husband Don is a retired contractor. They originally moved to this area from Lake Geneva, Wisconsin and joined our congregation last April. Welcome! Should You See “The Da Vinci Code?” Some Advice in Advance from Pastor The question is, “Why shouldn't you see it?” Unless, of course, letting others do one's thinking is preferred to forming one's own informed opinions. I haven't seen the movie, nor read the book, but I certainly intend to–especially because it is causing such a furor among other Christians. I prefer to form my own opinions, and have only a couple words of advance advice because I know many Christians simply cannot tolerate fictionalizing, speculating about, or reshaping any part of the story of Jesus for any reason. (It's hardly surprising that some Islamists feel the same way about Mohammed and Allah.) My advise, should you decide to see the movie or read the book is, 1. Realize that The Da Vinci Code is fiction which only has been suggested by actual events. Otherwise, many ideas will probably be offensive and at the very least challenge your faith. 2. Because challenges to our faith can be valued as learning experiences, it will be helpful to be reminded that faith is not dependent on understanding of history, science, or any other human disciplines. Christian faith is a gift to the faithful from God in Christ recorded in Scripture. 3. Don't expect that the writers and producers of “The Da Vinci Code” are people of faith. If you plan to let Columbia Pictures know what you think of this film, you'll do best to base your critique in intelligent thinking beyond saying, “It offends me.” Isn't that what a fresh look at what is generally accepted fact always does to some people? Want to make a lot of people really mad? Try rewriting history! New Picture Directories Arrived!! The Olan Mills picture directories are here. Each parish family can pick up a copy in the narthex. Pastor and Delegates Are in Tucson Tuesday through Friday this week at the Annual Assembly of the Grand Canyon Synod of the Lutheran Church in America. Our delegates are Mac and Kay McCollum. No meat casseroles please, because the main courses will provide plenty! A free will offering will be taken and any funds will be eligible for matching funds from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, and will benefit the youth attending Cruzando, the national youth gathering of the ELCA in July. Today is Mother's Day! We Give God Thanks For nurturing us; for making us feel wanted and secure; for comforting us in our physical and emotional hurts and wiping our tears; for showing us the way to repentance and forgiveness; for sharing love as the only way to gladness; and, especially, for opening us to faith by making divine love in Christ believable, we give you thanks!

Have you ever wondered who you can call? These directories are new not only because they're updated with new members, but because they list the time and talent tasks for which people have volunteered. We received repeated requests for this info from people who recruit volunteers, and from people who say, “I volunteer but noone ever calls me!” The information was taken from time and talent sheets which each person was asked to fill out. Is there no information with your name? Did you fill out a time and talent sheet? It's never too late to get one in the church office; and these directories will be updated every season. And, as always, let us know of any inaccuracies! The new picture directories are still in process by Olan Mills. They should be ready soon, but they won't contain volunteer information! Remember Your Name Tags. Not important to you? They are to others! The name tags should not be taken home, because many forget to bring them back and wear them. There are many name tags that have disappeared from their place in the entryway. This was discovered when they were alphabetized this week. Where's yours today?

These directories are new not only because they're updated with new members and addresses, but for the first time they list the time and talent tasks for which people have volunteered. This information was taken from the time and talent sheets which each person was asked to fill out. Is there no information with your name? Either a time and talent sheet was not filled out or the sheet didn't include your name! If you'd like a time and talent sheet, get one from the office. And, as always, let us know of any inaccuracies. The new picture directories are still in process by Olan Mills. They should appear soon.

CLU Women's Scene Community Lutheran women will meet Tuesday for Bible Study. The topic is “Act Boldly with Self Control”. Gail Shaver is the study leader and Elfine Lemke is the hostess. Come and enjoy it! At the Colorado River Spring Woman's Gathering in Las Vegas last Saturday, we made the scene with the second largest delegation of any congregation in the whole district!. The gathering was held at St. Andrew ‘s; and participants report that the Holy Spirit was much in evidence both in the music, and in the message from the Rev. Graciela Rivera: “When we look at each other it should be as if we see Christ in the mirror. Baptized into his Body, we are one with him, sharing his love and his unity with the Father and the Holy Spirit.” Please be reminded that fairly traded coffee, tea, and chocolate is available to all members and visitors to CLC from our women. Fair traded items mean that all profits go to third world farmers who raise them. There are no profits for anyone else, including us! These items are fresher than any you can find on the market, so see Elfine Lemke to purchase, enjoy, and be surprised!

GIFTS OF EASTER LILIES Many thanks to those who are providing Easter lilies today! They are: Bill & Sharon Garrison, Gordon & Naomi Gilbertson, Walter & Joan Hill, Jack & Sally Hiltbold, Don & Judy Kidder, Dean & Barbara Leuthauser, Dick McCracken, Verl & Joanne Owens, and Milt & Sharyl Vanerstrom who are remembering the hope of eternal life for Alton and Lea Etta Anderson, and Milton Vanerstrom Sr., and Scott Vanerstrom.

The Way to a Blessed Easter Unless we can identify ourselves with Christ's death and resurrection, unless we can approach his victory through the realization that everything we do will come to an end, that nothing that belongs to us is immortal, we will never be blessed with the meaning of Easter. Unless we die with Christ in service to others, he will not live in us and we in him. This is not our doing, it is a gift confirmed as we place all our hope in the Easter message: “He is risen.” As we shout with others, “He is risen, indeed,” we are strengthened on our life's way, making Christ's death and resurrection a metaphor for our daily experiences both of tragedy and joy, pain and pleasure, anxiety and peace. The peace and joy of the Easter good news bless you–and may you share with us here at Community, the profound message of the one whose life, death, and resurrection shows us the way, the truth, and the life that never ends. Continue the Easter Season! -Pastor John Pfeiffer

YOUTH AND FAMILY TASK GROUP Next Sunday there will be a special session for confirmation class youth following the first service to prepare for a retreat in May. Ishtar, Easter, Eggs and Easter Rabbits But...How Did Christ Get In? Ever wonder where the word “Easter” originated? Where the idea of the Easter rabbit came from? Easter eggs? The Easter Rabbit? Ishtar is to blame. In the ancient world Ishtar was a fertility goddess. Her symbol was the rabbit and the egg. Rabbits were ideal symbols for worshipers of Ishtar because rabbits were very fertile; they not only reproduced at a very high rate, but they were fun! It doesn't take much imagination to visualize just what happened in the temples as people worshiped Ishtar. To imagine that Hugh Hefner would have been amused, is most definitely an understatement! For the same reasons, the egg was also one of Ishtar's fertility symbols, for obvious reasons. Rabbits and eggs simply went together whenever anyone thought of Ishtar. You notice the similarity in sound between Ishtar and Easter? (Different languages are often very similar.) It would take a language historian to trace the evolution of Ishtar to Easter, but the style of celebration never changed. What would we kids do without Easter rabbits and Easter eggs? Even the time of celebration never changed. As you know, the festival of Easter is tied to the vernal equinox. (Easter Sunday is always the first Sunday after the first full moon following the vernal equinox.) It isn't hard to imagine why springtime was Ishtar's time to shine, for spring is the time of birth and rebirth in nature. But where does the celebration of Christ's resurrection fit in? First, we know his death and resurrection occurred at the time of Jewish Passover, and the equinox--the same time that pagans were celebrating Ishtar in a big way. Early Christians thought less and less about Passover, and eventually even neglected to celebrate it. Instead, they celebrated the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. The rest of the world, ignorant of just what the Christians were doing, concluded that they were simply among the “Ishtar people.” So it was that the resurrection of Christ became associated in the popular mind with Ishtar, from which the modern word “Easter” is derived! Isn't it ironic that the association stuck so well that it is accepted now without question, even among Christians? We've done a remarkable job of assimilating the things of popular culture. (Look, for further example, what Christians have done with Christmas!) Let's all continue to have fun! But is it time to think twice?

COOKBOOK IN PROGRESS If you have recipes to share from the Lenten Soup offerings or other soup favorites, please leave them in the church office. Amber Wallace will be preparing a Soup Cookbook that will be available for sale sometime in May. Proceeds will go for the benefit of Community Lutheran youth.

Expert quilters continue to create beautiful works from squares of cloth and if you've never done this sort of project, they are willing to share the expertise if you can use scissors and cut a straight line. Do you knit, crochet or do other types of needlework? Bring your project and share in the fellowship.

With Worship Wednesday Evenings Come at 6:30 PM for soup and gourmet delight prepared by Amber Wallace, cordon bleu chef. This is followed by brief Lenten worship at 7:15 PM. A study of the meaning of the Sacraments continues. We begin a new series of sessions on the meaning of the Eucharist. Pastor John Pfeiffer is study leader in of this section on Holy Communion. Thanks to Maureen Bessey for such thoughtful leadership of the study of Holy Baptism.

PROSPECTIVE NEW MEMBERS MEET WITH PASTOR TODAY BETWEEN SERVICES IN THE SANCTUARY
If you are thinking of transfer from another Christian congregation, or only want more information about Community or the Lutheran Church, you are cordially invited to come!

CHURCH OFFICE HOURS FOR NEXT WEEK
Tomorrow, Monday, our secretary will be out of town and Pastor is normally off Mondays, but he will be in the office mid-afternoon. Volunteers will take care of the office Tuesday and Wednesday, so expect irregular hours until Susan or secretary returns on Thursday.

Two Worship Services Continue Through Easter Sunday, April 17th, we will continue to have two Sunday worship times. The schedule will not change until after Easter. We will schedule only one Service April 23, and following Sundays through Summer and early Fall.

NEW HELP GROUP MEETS TUESDAYS 3:30 PM Write a note on the back of your “Friendslip” today if you are interested in the new, “Can We Help One Another?” group which meets here every Tuesday at 3:30 PM. There is growing interest in this group facilitated by Floyd Caster, a member of Immanuel Lutheran, Walker, MN. It is based on the New Testament and Twelve Step Programs. This is a chance to tackle almost anything you can think of, get support, and maybe even enjoy doing it! Six people have expressed their interest. Just come Tuesday!

Thanks to everyone who responded to the informational meeting for teaching volunteers in the Learning Center. We still have an urgent need for 1st and 2nd Grade teachers, and volunteers willing to help in any capacity. If you fear being ‘tied down' please be assured we work with personal schedules. It is sure that what you get from your work will far exceed what you put in! Call the church office, or Pat Thompson 758-1309.

The Difference Between Bumpers, Stickers, and Hang-Ups
There are no concrete bumpers in the new parking lot, to prevent a sticker! What, you say? A sticker happens when the front of a car gets hung up on a curb or divider. This can do much damage! Please take special care, especially when parking and facing the north curb. It is very high. Those Concrete Bumpers Are Expensive! We are taking care not to exceed the budget for the new parking lot, and those simple concrete bumpers are amazingly expensive, including proper installation. The Church Council is asking if persons in the congregation would be kind enough to “subscribe” to a bumper or any part of one–say cost of one installation. We'll let you know soon what the exact figure would be. But even now you can indicate on your ‘friendslip' if you might help in this way! Please consider.

Want to Hear This? From Le Cordon Bleu Chef... Amber Wallace, our Wednesday eve Lenten chef says, “Your requests have been heard!” After Lenten season, cookbooks with the Lenten Soup offerings and other traditional soup favorites will be available in print. Proceeds will go for the benefit of Community Lutheran youth. More details later.

JOIN us for join HANDS DAYJOIN HANDS DAY is a national day of volunteering that brings youth and adults together to improve their own communities. A benefit of the day comes through the friendships that will be made across generations. Thrivent Financial for Lutherans is one of many groups providing support for this event. Two service projects have been planned and we need volunteers to help. One project will include vacuuming and yard work for a congregation member. The second project will be to clean up along Ricca Road and Riverview Drive. Work times are scheduled for Saturday, April 1 from 8-noon and Sunday, April 2 following the first service. If you are willing to help on either project, please indicate your interest on your Friendslip. Pat Thompson, Joe Parrott, and Jan Parrott will be coordinating our effort.

LIMITED TIME OFFER! If you enjoyed the tasty items sold at the Bake Auction you can now order more! The following bakers have volunteered to make their specialties in exchange for a donation to benefit the Youth and Family Ministry. A NEW LOOK FOR SPRING! The Youth and Family Ministry is conducting a fund raiser featuring the Spring and Summer line of Cookie Lee fine Fashion jewelry. This is a good time for you to shop for Easter, Mother's Day, Graduation, Wedding, and Birthday gifts. Catalogs, with order forms inside, are available on the table in the narthex. If you are visiting, your orders can be mailed to you. Please call Sue Irgens at 928-542-1732, or leave a message in the church office, 928-763-2422, with questions you may have about the jewelry or the fund raiser. Cruzando Update Plans have been made for youth and sponsors to leave Las Vegas on July 4, flying to San Antonio to attend Cruzando. One of their experiences will be a congregation blind date, where they will be matched with another congregation coming to the Gathering. They will return to Las Vegas the evening of July 9.

Isn't it Great? Don't Laugh! Hope Sometimes Pays Off! Were you surprised to see the parking lot fully paved? Yes! This was the grace of God in action again, because the first bid came in at $42,000, but because one of our members was ‘working the scene' among contractors (Larry Mercer, to be exact) another contractor was found who just had another job fall through, had a work crew he needed to occupy, and who therefore bid the job for just $26,000, with a $2000 donation to the Church besides! Thanks, Larry, for your diligent work, and for your and Vada's personal, designated gifts for this purpose. Many others have worked to make this happen, and our deep appreciation to everyone is in order. The parking lot lights are on order. Verl Owens has prepared water lines and electrical conduit for the new area. Thanks to all who have given time and gifts to make this happen.

DID YOU Have Any Idea? Lent takes its name from ‘lengthening of days' that occurs before Easter. It is a 40 day period leading to Easter beginning on Ash Wednesday and ending the day before Easter. Lent has been observed for more than 1600 years in the Christian church. When counting the 40 days Sundays are skipped because Sundays always commemorate the Resurrection. The 40 days is the amount of time Jesus spent in the wilderness contemplating Satan's temptations, before he began is public ministry. This is the same amount of time each year when each Christian is invited to contemplate Christ's call to faith and life.

JOIN us for join HANDS DAY
Join Hands Day provides an opportunity to give service to our community. Workers are needed to help with two service projects planned for Sunday April 2, following the first service. One project will include vacuuming and yard work for a congregation member. The second project will be to clean up along Ricca Road and Riverview drive. If you are willing to help on either project, please indicate your interest on your Friendslip. Join Hands Day efforts are supported by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. Meet Our New Council Members Elected in January, 2006

JoAnne Moreland was born in Martin, South Dakota and raised on a farm in Hay Springs, Nebraska. She and husband Chet were married in California and raised a family in Whittier, CA where they attended the Lutheran Church. JoAnne attended Fullerton College after the children were in school, worked for a chemical company for 12 years and then became a Realtor. The Morelands moved to Bullhead City in 1984 when Chet bought Smitty's Bait and Tackle. When it was sold in 1990, JoAnne went back into real estate in Bullhead City. “I look forward to helping Community Lutheran grow and continuing to spread our faith and God's good will.”
Jamie Wilhelm was born in Wheatland, Wyoming. He has a degree in Vocal Music and moved to Bullhead City because he needed a change. He is currently employed by the Colorado Union High School District working in the transportation area. His wife, Cheryl, teaches music at Mohave High School. Jamie and Cheryl have a son, Brandon, and daughters Paula and Janna. Janna is a junior at Mohave High School. They attended Covenant Lutheran Church in Wheatland, WY before coming to Community Lutheran Church.
Walter Copeland was born in Norfolk/Virginia Beach, Virginia, the youngest of six children. His childhood was spent in Southeastern Virginia right on the Atlantic Ocean. Norfolk is the home of the worlk's largest Navy base which probably explains why, in August of 1951, Walter joined the United States Army instead of the Navy. He served in Korea and Vietnam during his 20 years in the U.S. Army. While in the military, he served in the infantry/Rangers, and military police. These duties were in several states including Alaska and Hawaii. He spent nine years in France and Germany and a year in Korea and Vietnam during their wars. From 1970-2001 Walter lived in Tacoma/Seattle, Washington where he worked for the Tacoma, WA Police Department and the Pierce Co., WA sheriff's dept. for 20 years. This included several years as their jail commander. Walter and wife, Sonna bought a home in Fox Creek in 2001. He has a degree in Criminology, and after 40 years of service to others, he now has time to enjoy motorcycling, traveling and maintaining his homes in Bullhead City and Washington state.

SYNOD APPOINTS INTERIM BISHOP The Grand Canyon Synod Council of the ELCA has appointed the Rev. Alton Zenker to serve as Interm Bishop, effective February 15, 2006. The Council' s appointment was made upon the recommendation of Bishop Mark S. Hanson, Presiding Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), and in consultation with him. Rev. Zenker, 72, is a former bishop of the ELCA Central/Southern Illinois Synod, serving from 1994 until his retirement in 2000. He was appointed by the Council following the resignation of Michael Neils as Bishop of the Grand Canyon Synod. Zenker will serve as Interim Bishop until a new bishop is elected at the Annual Grand Canyon Synod Assembly, May 24-26. The Assembly this year is being held in Tucson, and two delegates are being sought by the Congregation Council of Community Lutheran Church to represent us at this Assembly. If you are interested in serving as a delegate, please speak to Pastor John Pfeiffer or to any member of our Congregation Council

Some 2006 Weekly Offering Envelopes have still not been picked up from the table in the narthex! The use of offering envelopes is a good discipline and reminder of the importance of weekly giving, These envelopes will not be mailed, so please pick them up!

Plan to Join Us Every Wednesday Evening During Lent!
An informal time of good food (soup by a cordon bleu chef who has volunteered their services), with salad and other good things prepared by members of Community, begins at 6:30 PM every Wednesday during Lent, until Holy Week. Following supper and fellowship, an interesting guided discussion on the meaning of Baptism and Holy Communion are planned, ending with brief worship. Welcome to everyone!

A Liturgy for Healing on Ash Wednesday
Do you tend to think that Lent is a ‘downer'? A time of focus on the negative implications of “ashes to ashes and dust to dust”? There is good news! God has not left us in the dust! He offers us salvation in Christ, and prayers for healing–both spiritual and physical–are perfect companions to acknowledgment that without the grace of God in Christ we can, indeed, finally look forward only to dust. Not so for those who enter the Body of Christ through Baptism and are strengthened often by his gift of grace in his Holy Communion with us.

Women's Conference Planned
Mark your calendars now for our Colorado River Conference scheduled to be held with other ELCA women April 29th in Las Vegas at St. Andrew Lutheran Church.

This is the Body of Christ COMMUNION SERVERS...
We Expect You Today! Between Services, there will be an information session in the sanctuary that is required for all Communion Assistants. Our Worship Task Group is preparing guidelines for all assistants serving Holy Communion, and we need everyone's help and suggestions in preparation. No instructions have ever been given, and the ELCA requires this of all worship assistants. There will be a similar session for ushers, as there have been in the past for readers of Scripture. Please co-operate and help us!

A NOTE ON TODAY'S CHOIR ANTHEM
Today's anthem, “It Is Well With My Soul,” was written in 1873 by Horatio Stafford after he experienced three major traumas in his life--the death of this son, financial disaster resulting from the Chicago fire of 1871, and the loss of four daughters at sea in a shipwreck. (He had sent his wife and daughters to Europe with plans to join them later.) After the shipwreck, his wife simply wired him, “Saved alone.” Several weeks later, as he was sailing to Europe himself, his ship passed the location where his daughters had perished. He was greatly moved, and wrote these inspiring words of deep and abiding faith in God.. May these words comfort you as well, surrounding you with God's gift of deep and abiding peace, regardless of your life experience!

For Two of our Members Today is a Very Special Day! Verl and Joanne Owens were married fifty years ago, Feb. 12, 1955. They have cake to share with you, and Verl promises to wear his wedding suit! Congratulations in more ways than one!

SOUPER BOWL OF CARING
Members and friends of Community Lutheran joined last Sunday with congregations throughout the United States and Canada to collect canned food and contribute gifts to local, national, and international anti-hunger agencies, including Lutheran World Relief. Your Souper Bowl of Caring was a ‘best ever marker here at Community. You gave 99 nonperishable food items (at last count) which were given to Bullhead City HELP food pantry. You gave $280 in monetary donations which will be sent to Lutheran World Relief. Thanks to all of you who helped! Are you a Seahawks fan? They'll undoubtedly be consoled to know that their fans gave so generously to this worthy Super Bowl Sunday effort to stem local and worldwide hunger.

This Ain't No Ordinary Task Table! SO BRING FRIENDS TO SEE IT And TAKE A GOOD LOOK YOURSELF! The extraordinary piece of furniture displayed right now in the entryway to our building was designed for a keyboard, and has ‘raise and lower' space for a computer monitor, but HAS MANY POTENTIAL USES. It has been in our sanctuary and we now need the space for a growing choir, so it is necessary for us to part with this beautiful piece of furniture. It is available to anyone who makes an acceptable offer; and it can be used in home or business. This is an extraordinary piece, hand crafted by the Sockwells (yep, a ‘famous maker'). It is made of quality hardwood, and originally cost well over $800. Interested? Be first to call the church office at 763-2422 and make your offer. Complete measurements are 74" long x 38" wide x 35 1/4" high.

Congrats to Chelsey Larson! Selected for the People to People Leadership Summit at UCLA, this is no ordinary honor for a high school student! Chelsey is daughter of Kate and Steve Larson.

High Schoolers BOUND FOR the crossing! Cruzando is the Spanish word for ‘crossing' and is the theme of the ELCA National Youth Gathering next July. It's about crossing the boundaries that keep us from God and from one another, and about God, who has crossed all human boundaries in Christ. The to hard work and the generosity of our Community Family guarantees that we have reached the goal set for sending six young people to Cruzando in July. It had been estimated that $1000 will be needed per person to cover travel, registration, room and board. Because of your support of the bake auction and matching funds from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, that goal has been met! Thank you, Community family and friends, for your help!

The Youth and Family Task Group will be soon be planning for the next, following year to decide what activities to continue. New goals will be set for any additional funds to be raised so that we can continue to support the young people as they grow in their knowledge of Christ and their service to the church. This does not happen without the support of parents who are active in the church, and it does not happen without a church full of people who make kids a focus and a priority. Thanks again, Community, because you are a caring bunch!

Looking Ahead to Lent
Worship Task Group is working with Pastor to plan a study series in the meaning of the Sacraments, on Wednesdays during Lent. The soup suppers will be very much anticipated this year, because a Cordon Bleu chef who just moved here, is offering to make the soup every week! Wow! We do look forward not just to this, but to our learning and fellowship which deepens our experience of how the risen Christ comes to us.

Maybe you'll help us with this simple task? Bought a used, small metal table for use in church office. Needs minor clean up and a coat of spray paint.

Some 2005 annual statements of giving and 2006 envelopes for offering and building fund/debt reduction are still not picked up from the table under the namet ags in the narthex! Please save us the cost of postage! Thanks!

Today, utherans join with other churches and organizations throughout the United States and Canada to raise funds and collect canned goods to benefit hunger-fighting agencies and ministries. This year, as the Pittsburgh Steelers and Seattle Seahawks meet on the field in Detroit to determine the 2006 Super Bowl champion, caring people throughout the nation join the Souper Bowl of Caring. This is an event through in which people can easily contribute something to help people in need. Donations are used to support local, national and international anti-hunger efforts. In 2005, over 4 million dollars were raised in this project; $600,000 came from Lutheran groups alone. Some 1,955 Lutheran congregations joined nearly 11,000 congregations representing several denominations in the effort. You will find the Community Lutheran Youth collecting canned (nonperishable) food items and/or dollars before and after services today, as part of the 2006 effort. Please help us to reach our goals of $100 and 100 cans by donating a can or a dollar. Drop your donation in the soup pot of your choice and we'll keep our own Souper Bowl score with your support. Canned food will be taken to the Bullhead City HELP organization which supplies meals to those referred by DES. Donations of dollars will be sent to the Lutheran World Relief Effort.

MEETING FOR COMMUNION ASSISTANTS On February 12th , between Services, there will be an information session that will be required for all Communion Assistants. Communion Assistants are being asked for input and their suggestions for preparation of guidelines which will be given to everyone who serves Holy Communion. There will be similar listening sessions for readers and ushers in the coming week, These are projects of the Task Group for Worship.

BRING FRIENDS TO SEE THIS! TAKE A LOOK YOURSELF! The beautiful piece of furniture displayed right now in the entryway to our building was DESIGNED FOR A KEYBOARD BUT HAS MANY POTENTIAL USES. It has been in our sanctuary. We need the space for a growing choir. New, more compact, keyboard possibilities make it necessary for us to part with this piece of furniture. It is available to anyone who makes an acceptable offer. It has many, many possibilities for use in home or business. This is an extraordinary piece of furniture designed for special use and constructed by the Sockwells, using quality hardwood, at a cost of $800. If anyone is interested, please contact the church office at 763-2422 to make an offer. Console measurements are 74" long x 38" wide x 35 1/4" high.

A BIG THANK YOU!! Thanks to all who contributed to the brunch and bake auction by baking, bidding, cooking, donating and eating. The auction raised $1091, which was beyond the wildest expectations. Free will offering from both services and the brunch totaled $409, bringing the total for the day to $1500. The activity will also qualify for $1300 in matching funds from Thrivent Financial, for a total of $2800 realized! There were so many people who contributed to the brunch and bake auction with wonderful baked items for the auction, casseroles, ebelskivers and fruit for the brunch, serving and clean-up...this was really a Community Family effort. Special thanks go to our auctioneer, Ken Kazeli and his assistants Alecia and Janna who made the auction an entertaining event. Keith and Karon Sondgeroth provided their skills for organizing and recording items during the sale so that all went smoothly. Minutes from the annual meeting are posted in the narthex. Those in attendance discussed and voted on several issues of interest.

Weekly Holy Communion? Decided to continue the present schedule for Holy Communion on the first and third Sundays and on festivals. Applause during worship? It was decided to leave clapping during worship to the discretion of those worshiping. Walter Copeland, JoAnne Moreland and Jamie Wilhelm were elected to the Church Council. THRIVENT FINANCIAL MEMBERS All Thrivent Financial members are encouraged to attend a meeting hosted by the Colorado River Chapter Board that will be held on Saturday, Feb. 11 starting at 10AM at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Bullhead City. June Maynus, a member of the Lutheran Community Service Team, Pacific Southwest Region will be conducting the training and educational events at the meeting. Lunch will be served following the meeting. Contact Elfine Lemke for more information.
